According to The National Enquirer, Dubya's drinking again, hitting the sauce on a regular basis, bucking under the pressure of being what one of the worst Presidents in American history.
Ordinarily, such headlines in a tabloid like the Enquirer brings guffaws but the gossipy tabloid broke a number of stories about Bill Clinton's sexcapades during the Monica Lewinsky debacle and other news sites, including our sister publication Capitol Hill Blue, suggest the Prez is back on the bottle.
As a recovering alcoholic (sober 11 years, three months and 15 days), the news doesn't surprise me, although it is depressing. As a fellow traveler, I hate to see anyone give in to the Beast. But the signs are there: disinterest, inability to focus, a lack of compassion during the Hurricane Katrina nightmare and growing reports of temper tantrums. And prominent Washington psychiatrist Dr. Justin A. Frank of George Washington University, author of the book, Bush on the Couch: Inside the Mind of the President, agrees:
It is true that blame and denial are arguably as typical of politicians as of alcoholics, though the latter are generally more likely to involve family members in the process. But blame is also a reminder of one’s destructive impulse; the individual who hasn’t resolved his anxieties surrounding that impulse is particularly motivated to avoid confronting those anxieties, which he can accomplish by shifting responsibility to someone else, or denying it outright. Drinkers turn to alcohol to suppress anxiety.
Bush is a complusive liar: a trademark of a drunk. He avades responsibility: Another warning sign. He is moody and temperamental: Strike three.

Thanks for your perceptive comments. I also have a long term recovery process going on and am convinced that this president is on a dry drunk, if not back on the sauce. I do believe that Mr. Bush was drinking and passed out when he injured himself. It was passed off that he choked on a pretzel with no one else around. I have seen injuries such as those on his face, on myself, after falling face down into gravel after drinking too much swipe; a version of pineapple wine. When is this guy going to get honest. In of my daily readings a fellow named Bill W. comments on spiritual arrogance and we are seeing the results of just relying on "God" for sobriety doesn't work. Again, thanks doug.

RE: Enquirer. I am not inclined to give much credibility to what is printed in scandal tabloids but it would seem to be a bit brave and risky to print such a story even if it were true. To dare print such a story if it isn't true strikes me as so risky that that I can't imagine the Enquirer doing it. So.... I have to think it is true and further that they can back it up. Besides, where is the howling from the Bushevics? Big question is who is the source?
Not only is he a drunk and a coke snorting fool, but he is the WORST President ever. Just like Calvin Coolidge, W. is sending the Nation into a depression. His cronies are laughing all the way to the bank and yet there remains over 40% of the electorate that is so scared, stupid, or brainwashed that he continues to enjoy their support.
Now that Katrina and Rita have caused massive populations to be moving about the country we have our own version of the 1930's dust bowl only now it's the wind bowl and the Government is woefully prepared to help anyone.
I'm in recovery, also, and have little doubt about this assessment of Mr. Bush.
However, I have to say, based on my experience, that it is unfair to assume one cannot pursue recovery based on "God", or whatever alternative, alone. I have my "2 month coin" - you know what I mean (<: Then I decided it was time to start living my life, instead of spending it in meetings. Now, at 10 years, 4 months, and 20 days (I count them once a year, except today!),the "Beast" does not ride my back and I rarely think about it - except to be VERY thankful. And I am not a "dry drunk".
Don't get me wrong, I have every understanding of those who need to do this another way. Bill W. and his friends do great things and I respect them highly. But, I am also aware that they have a vested interest in keeping those so afflicted convinced that they can't recover any other way.
Thanks, Doug - your website has been a real eye-opener.

It's news to me that AA has a "vested interest" in making people believe that AA is the only way to get, and stay, sober. It's the only way for me but if anyone can make it some other way, more power to them! I am 15+ years sober and counting and I wouldn't have made it this far without AA.
George Bush works out like crazy. Persons who are that fit typically don't have the kind of accidents he has because they are more coordinated. People have also commented elsewhere on his atypical perspiration in places like the hot south when others around him are not perspiring nearly as heavily. Persons who work out regularly also have less of that when they are not working out. You see that kind of perspiration from people who are hung over or strung out. Finally, people who regularly heavily work out tend to be more calm because of the natural endorphins produced. Anyone who isn't has to be under an inordinate amount of stress or possibly is decompensating due to mental illness.
Regarding George W's possible drinking--why is the press not saying anything? If National Enquirer knows, then they must also know. If this is the "liberal press", what is holding them up? They didn't do it with Clinton!!!! Every little trivial gossip--true or untrue--made it to the papers when he was in office.
